Getting Started - Beginners Weight Training Routine
training is finding the time to work out and having the dedication to follow a routine. Weight training is like dieting in that it takes a real lifestyle change for most to realize lasting results. You can't weight train for 2 weeks, quit, and start up again a few months later and expect the gains you made to still be there. It takes consistency and desire. Michael Jordan didn't become a great basketball player without a desire to be the best he could be. Lance Armstrong didn't give up his desire to win the Tour de France despite cancer. To start a weight training routine you need that desire, the desire to gain strength, the desire to lose a few pounds, the desire to be in better shape and healthier.

Fortunately, if you've never weight trained before the results you get from a beginners weight training routine should light a fire in your belly and give you the determination and desire needed to keep at it. As for the excuse of not having enough time to work out, a weight training workout shouldn't take more than 1 hour on average. Weight training for a longer period of time can cause overtraining, and be worse for you than undertraining. Shorter, more intense weight training workouts save time and can produce incredible results quickly.

Your beginners weight training routine should be a total body workout with just a few exercises and sets. At this time, you'll just want to learn how to properly perform the major compound exercises like the bench press and squat. Try a weight training routine like this every other day.

Squat or Deadlift 2-3 sets (do squats 1 workout, deadlifts the next)
Leg Extensions 2-3 sets
Leg Curls 2-3 sets
Bench Press 2-3 sets
Pull-ups or Pulldowns 2-3 sets
Bent Over Rows or Cable Rows 2-3 sets
Military Press 2-3 sets
Biceps Curl (barbell or dumbbell) 2-3 sets
Lying Triceps Extension 2-3 sets
Standing or Seated Calf Raises 2-3 sets

To some this may sound like to much to do at one weight training workout; but honestly, if you're ever going to overtrain a bit, this is the time to do it as your body will be forced to adapt to this new stimulus.
